AVTEC will train Coast Guard icebreaker crew

Seven crewmembers of the U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker Healy will participate in ice navigation training at the Alaska Institute of Technology facilities in Seward, the first course of its kind in the nation and the only one approved by the Coast Guard.

Alaska’s presence in the Arctic is stronger and safer thanks to AVTEC’s world class maritime training,” said Labor Commissioner Heidi Drygas, who announced the training plans on Aug. 8. “We’re proud to assist the U.S. Coast Guard by providing the training they need to operate safely.”

Junior officers from Icebreaker Healy will enroll in the ice navigation course this week. They will focus on mission critical ice navigation topics like being beset in ice, backing and ramming, entering ice, and route finding. Most of the training will utilize AVTEC’s Kongsberg Full Mission Bridge Simulator.
