Silvers still coming in Copper, Bering river districts

Fishing for coho salmon in the Copper River and Bering river districts is expected to remain open as usual through early October, with most of the catch at this point going to smaller processors.

Both districts opened for yet another 24-hour commercial fishing period on Sept. 22.

Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game at Cordova said both districts would open for a 36-hour commercial fishing period twice weekly, starting at 7 a.m. on Monday and Thursday.

For the week ending Sept. 10, the actual Copper River Delta coho salmon aerial survey count was 41,150 fish, versus an anticipated range of 21,447 to 44-904 fish.

The preliminary harvest estimate from the 24-hour period that began on Sept. 19 was 9,958 silvers, with 143 deliveries reported.

For the Bering River district in the week ended Sept. 10, the aerial survey count was 13,350 fish, versus an anticipated range of 8,803 to 22,345 fish. A preliminary harvest estimate from the 24-hour period in that district that began on Sept. 19 was 5,335 silvers, with 57 deliveries reported, ADF&G said.
