Sheridan goat hunt ends

Registration permit hunt RG231 for mountain goats in Unit 6C has been closed by emergency order by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to prevent unsustainable harvest.

The closure, effective Oct. 18, affects only registration permit hunt RG231 in Unit 6C, including that portion of Unit 6C east of Scott Glacier and the main channel of Scott River, north of the Copper River Highway, and west of Sheridan Glacier and the main channel of Glacier River.

The 2016 aerial survey for goats in registration permit area RG231 confirmed the presence of 173 goats. ADF&G set a maximum allowable state harvest at eight goat units. Additional take beyond the harvest objective could harm the long-term stability of the mountain goat population. With the harvest a three nannies and one billy as of Oct. 17, Cordova area biologist Charlotte Westing said hunters still in the field were likely to have taken additional goats not yet reported.

No other mountain goat hunting regulations in the remainder of Game Management Unit 6 are affected by this emergency order.
