Cordova High junior basketball team faces Valdez at home

The red hot Cordova High School junior high boys meet Valdez here today, Oct. 21, and tomorrow, Oct. 22, in their final home games of the season. Cordova’s young hoopsters have rattled off four wins in a row, including a rare sweep of Valdez on their home court.

The CHS lads topped the Huskies 35-19 and 22-20 on games played on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at Valdez. Evan Gatton led Cordova with 14 points in the opener. Mar Augustin finished with a game high 10 points in the rematch.

The Cordova Junior High “B” team split the series, winning 18-10 and 16-12.

Cordova continued it’s early season success with a sweep of Grace Christian here last weekend.  Led by 19 points from 5’11” 8th grader Rustyn Bradford, Cordova won the opener 28-25 in overtime, and swept the series by a final of  26-22 on Saturday.  Bradford and Gatton each had 10 points in that game.

Cordova also won both “B” games by scores of 26-16 and 23-12.

Coach Doug Carroll was happy with the quick start, and especially the wins in Valdez.

“It’s not very often you come home from Valdez with a pair of wins”, said the first year mentor.

The young Cordova junior high girls teams play hard, but are still seeking their first win on the year.  “For many of the players, this is the first time they have touched a basketball, and we are facing some very good competition”, said Coach Brad Sjostedt.

Today’s action versus Valdez starts with Boys “B” at 4:30; Girls “B” at 5:45;  Boys “A” at 7:00, and Girls “A” at 8:15.   Saturday the schedule will be Girls “B” at 3:30; Boys “B” at 4:45; Girls “A” at 6:00, and Boys A at 7:15.

Cordova will travel on Oct. 3-5 for games at Seward, Grace, and Lumen; and close out their season at the Valdez Tourney on Oct. 11-12.
