Walker says he has prostate cancer

Gov. Bill Walker says he has been diagnosed with a treatable form of prostate cancer, and that he will have surgery in December to remove the cancer.

Walker made the announcement on Nov. 4 in a statement issued by his office.

The governor said that he and his wife, Donna, learned recently that he had prostate cancer and as his doctor has advised, he will have surgery in December.

“It is anticipated I will need no further treatment post-surgery,” he said.

“The diagnosis has not and will not impair my ability to perform my duties as governor,” he said.

Walker said he had had no symptoms and it was only through a regular checkup that this diagnosis was made.

“I urge all Alaskans to make sure they schedule regular checkups so that early detection and treatment of health issues are possible,” he said.
