Conversation continues on Nirvana Park

A community conversation continues on Nirvana Park, the Spit and Eyak Lake over the future of the area, city of Cordova officials said on Nov. 8.

At a community meeting held Nov, 2, discussion focused on inviting an Australian team of researchers that would volunteer its time, travel and efforts to assist the Native population in Cordova with identifying sacred burial sites possibly lost due to weather and time and memory in Cordova, the city said in a statement.

The Australian team would return to Cordova with their ground penetrating radar equipment to do research and exploration at the Spit and Nirvana Park, as well as burial sites at 5 Mile and 21 Mile.

Meanwhile the Cordova Historical society has decided to use $1,500 of the Rasmuson Foundation Nirvana Park Tier 1 grant to pay for the cost of transporting the GPR equipment to Cordova.

City staff is continuing to research land ownership, complete a historical timeline and file and research options for safer swimming and jet ski opportunities on the lake
