AVTEC gets first woman director

Alaska’s post-secondary vocational education school in Seward has a new director, Cathy LeCompte, the first woman to serve in that post since the school was founded more than 40 years ago.

The appointment was announced by Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Heidi Drygas on Nov. 10.

LeCompte most recently served as the associate dean of academic affairs for the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Community and Technical College. Prior to that, she was campus director of the University of Alaska Southeast in Ketchikan. LeCompte earned a bachelor’s degree in business management at City University in Bellevue, WA., and a master’s degree in leadership at Seattle University.

AVTEC offers training programs in maritime, professional baking and cooking, industrial trades, welding, and information technology.
