Junior high hoopers finish season strong

Cordova Junior High squads finished the season strong, performing well in the Valdez Tournament on Nov. 10-12. Cordova’s boys won three out of five A games, topping Glennallen, Monroe and Valdez, while losing a pair to powerhouse Delta twice.

“We were just overmatched by Delta,” said Cordova Coavh Doug Carroll.  Their coach said that we were the best team that they faced throughout the season, and they finished the season undefeated.”

Evan Batton led Cordova with 18 in their 42-19 win over Glennallen. Gatton had 12 in the 41-11 victory over Valdez, while Chrisbelle Pena was tops with 10 in Cordova’s 34-32 win over Monroe.

Cordova struggled in the B tournament. They went 1-3, topping Monroe 29-24, but failing to Delta 27-22, Glennallen 23-22, and Monroe 24-16.

Cody Shaw was named to the B All-Tournament team, and also received the Team Sportsmanship Award.

The Cordova A and B girls played eight games total, winning four and losing four.

“All the games were hard fought, and the losses were very close,” said Cordova Coach Brad Sjostedt. “The girls held tight against Monroe and Delta, which are both high level 3A schools. The Monroe A team received second place to the Valdez A team, which was undefeated this season.”

Cordova’s Andrea Vargas aeraged 8 points, two blocks, and six rebounds for the weekend, and was named to the All-Tournament A team. Jacey Pallas, who averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals over the weekend, was named to the All-Tournament B squad.
