Ailing crewmember medevaced near Kodiak Island

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced a fisherman from the fishing vessel Transit in Shelikof Strait near Kodiak Island on Dec. 18, after the patient was reported to be suffering from seizure like symptoms.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Anchorage received a medevac request from the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was dispatched.

The Coast Guard had received reports of a low pressure system approaching the area with the potential of bringing increased winds and seas over the next several hours. A quick response of the air crew to the scene made it possible for a safe hoist and transit back to Kodiak, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Chris Sheffield, Sector Anchorage watchstander.

Weather on the scene at the time of the medevac was reported as 7-mile an hour winds with choppy seas and 12 miles of visibility.
