EPA launches $1 billion water financing project

Approximately $1 billion in credit assistance for water infrastructure projects is available under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act program.

The program offers long-term, low-cost credit assistance in the form of direct loans and loan guarantees to creditworthy water projects, the EPA announced Jan. 10.

WIFIA provides an added option for financing large-scale projects in addition to the State Revolving Funds and bond market.

The funds are available to state, local and tribal governments; private entities, partnerships, and State revolving Fund programs.

“The launch of the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act program marks a huge step forward for modernizing our nation’s aging water infrastructure,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

Funds are available for a variety of projects ranging from drinking water treatment and distribution projects to wastewater conveyance and treatment projects.
