Bill would proclaim February as Black History Month

A bipartisan resolution introduced by Sen. Tom Begich, D-Anchorage, would declare February 2017 as Black History Month in Alaska.

The Senate resolution cites the contributions African Americans have made to building the state of Alaska, from the hundreds of members of Company L, 24th Infantry, U.S. Army, who were stationed at Dyea and Skagway during the Gold Rush, to engineers who cared the Alaska-Canada Highway through remote and desolate land, and often went unrecognized for their achievements.

Co-sponsors include Senators David Wilson, R-Wasilla; Berta Gardner, D-Anchorage; Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage; Donny Olson, D-Nome; Dennis Egan, D-Juneau; Anna MacKinnon, R-Anchorage; Mia Costello, R-Anchorage; Click Bishop, R-Fairbanks; Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak; Pete Kelly, R-Fairbanks; Shelly Hughes, R-Palmer; Kevin Meyer, R-Anchorage; and Nastasha von Imhof, R-Anchorage.
