Coast Guard rescues three near Akutan Harbor

Three people aboard the fishing vessel Predator were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard on Feb. 13 when the boat ran hard aground near Akutan Harbor, resulting in an eight-inch crack in the hull.

Coast Guard 17th District Command Center watchstanders were notified by Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders of the incident, and an MH-60 Jayhwak helicopter crew was diverted to the scene.

All three crewmembers were hoisted aboard the helicopter and taken to Akutan. No injuries were reported.

Jayhawk helicopter co-pilot T. Scott Verhage said the crew of the Predator was well prepared, having all the safety equipment necessary to help find them and execute the rescue.

Weather on scene at the time of the rescue was 25-mile-an-hour winds and 10-foot seas.
