Giessel proposes $75 fee per studded tire

Legislation proposed by Sen. Cathy Giessel, R-Anchorage, would boost the fee imposed on retail sale of studded tires for use on highways from $5 to $75 per tire.

The corrected fees may then be appropriated by the Legislature for repair and maintenance of roads maintained by the state, according to Senate Bill 50.

The act, if approved, would take effect on July 1, adding $280 to the cost of four studded tires purchased at a retail shop in Alaska.
