Snow still blankets much of Alaska, but the heat is on for Salmonfest, the big festival weekend at the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds in Ninilchik celebrating Alaska’s wild salmon on four stages.

Among the headliners will be festival stalwarts Rusted Root, making their first appearance, plus Rising Appalachia, The California Honeydrops and Pimps of Joytime, along with some of Alaska’s best musicians.

Sixty plus bands will be performing on four stages during the three day festival, featuring an ever improving “salmon Causeway” spawned by Cook Inletkeeper, the festival partner in “fish first” advocacy. Salmonfest will also pack in arts and crafts, special brews, food booths and an expanded program for children.

The festival, under the stewardship of Kachemak Bay Conservation Society, in partnership with Cook Inletkeeper, is offering deeply discounted “Salmonfest or Bust” tickets.  The deadline on that discount deal, at Salmonfestalaska.org, ends on March 24.

More information on participating musicians is upcoming.

Rusted Root, formed in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1990, will be at Salmonfest, with a fusion of acoustic, rock, world and other music styles, drawing on African, Latin American and Native American influences.
