Murkowski: imperative to protect energy delivery systems

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, says that given the scope and severity of attacks on cybersecurity that the government must be of greater assistance to asset owners and encourage better equipment designs.

Murkowski, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, held a committee hearing on April 4 to examine current efforts to protect domestic energy delivery systems from cybersecurity threats and to evaluate efforts to security the nation’s natural gas pipeline system.

The hearing also fostered a discussion about how the energy industry has worked with federal partners to modify their digital networks, engage in research and advanced technologies, develop new products and create organization to share information and best practices, Murkowski said.

Archived video of the hearing is on the committee’s website, https://www.energy.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/hearings-and-business-meetings?ID=36559AB8-2C94-44DF-8A90-6F03C8393038

Committee aide Nicole Daigle said that the committee will continue to conduct oversight and work on legislation related to cybersecurity.
