“Birds of Paradise,” an art show featuring the work of renowned ornithologist and artist David Sibley, has opened in the Copper River Galley of the Cordova Museum.

Renowned ornithologist and artist David Sibley signs books during the opening reception of “Birds of Paradise” Thursday May 4 at the Cordova Center’s Copper River Gallery. The exhibit features over 50 pieces by local artists and six signed prints by Sibley.

Sibley is the author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds, considered by many to be the most comprehensive guide for North American field identification.

He is also a master artist of birds. Over 200 birders and art lovers turned out for the opening reception on May 4, hosted by the Cordova Historical Society.

Paula Payne curated the show, which also features over 50 other pieces on display by Cordova artists.

During the opening reception, Sibley signed his books and Shorebird Festival programs while those in attendance enjoyed refreshments provided by the Cordova Historical Society. Several pieces were sold that evening and more remain on sale. The society receives a percentage of the sales and all funds raised are earmarked for new exhibits being created for the museum.

Sibley donated all proceeds from the sale of his prints to the society.

Society volunteers and museum staff are currently working behind the scenes to install new exhibits being created in-house. The entrance exhibit, “Sense of Place,” is nearly complete and will be unveiled at the beginning of June.
