SeaShare goal: 2 million seafood servings for hurricane relief

SeaShare, on Bainbridge Island, Wash., has partnered with several major companies to deliver 2 million servings of seafood to food banks in Texas, Florida and 10 other states hit by hurricanes Harvey and Irma in August and September.

“The disasters our country has faced in recent weeks are unprecedented,” said Jim Harmon, executive director of SeaShare. “Thankfully, the seafood industry has responded with great generosity to the urgent needs in Houston, in Florida and in states where people are struggling with hunger every day.”

SeaShare has received seafood donations and pledges from a number of entities, including the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Clear Springs Foods, Harvest Select, High Liner Foods, North Pacific Seafoods, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Orca Bay Seafoods, Regal Springs, Sealord North America, Trident Seafoods and Unisea. Custom Cold Express and Preferred Freezer Services have donated freight and cold storage, Harmon said.

SeaShare is now actively seeking shelf stable seafood donations for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, in the wake of hurricane Maria.

Companies able to donate cans or pouches of seafood are asked to contact info@seashare.org.
