Nation, Alaska celebrate seafood in October

October is National Seafood Month, and a whole lot more.

This month is also Alaska Seafood Month, Gov. Bill Walker has declared Oct. 25 to be Commercial Fishing Day.

On Oct. 10 the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute will announce the winner of its first Alaska Commercial Fishing Video Contest, in which contestants share personal stories about brining wild Alaska seafood to market.

ASMI is encouraging consumers to “Ask for Alaska” at the seafood counter, dining halls and restaurants, and to look for “Alaska” on frozen and canned seafood packaging, as well as menus.

Beyond Alaska, national grocery chains that will be hosting in-store promotions and seafood cooking demonstrations include Albertson’s, Giant Eagle, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Safeway, Schnucks and Whole Foods Market.

Alaska seafood will also be served to leading food industry professionals at the 2017 James Beard Foundation Food Summit, Oct. 23-24 in New York City.
