Coast Guard Vessel exams coming in September

A team of commercial fishing vessel examiners from the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit will be in Cordova Sept. 4 through Sept. 8. They will conduct free, non-fault dockside examinations focused on crewmember safety and to ensure emergency preparedness.

These exams, recommended for all fishing vessels, are conducted on a limited basis, so vessel owners are advised to prepare for a scheduled exam by reviewing applicable requirements and purchasing the necessary equipment for their vessel in advance.

Visit fishsafewest.info and click the “Checklist Generator” link. This application accepts input on the fishing vessel, such as length, persons aboard, where it operates, and generates a list of requirements that apply to that specific fishing vessel. This information lets owners know exactly what Coast Guard dockside examiners will look for during the exam.

“Commercial fishing vessels are required to comply with the commercial fishing vessel safety regulations and this exam could reduce the chances of being boarded or the time spent on a safety check during an at-sea boarding,” said Cmdr. Michael Franklin,  Captain of the Port, for the Marine Safety Unit at Valdez.

Those wishing to complete their annual exam in Cordova should contact examiners in Valdez before Aug. 20 at 907-795-5885. Information required to schedule an exam includes preferred date and time, slip number, type of vessel, size, name, color of vessel and owner contact information.

For further information contact Petty Officer Kevin O’Rourke at 907-835-7226.
