The Lady Wolverines head out to the championship game last Saturday against Nikiski. (JOY LANDALUCE, Alaska Newspapers) The Cordova boys basketball team swept visiting Nikiski last week, although each game was different. In Friday's 61-43, the Wolverines let their guard down a bit. On Saturday, though, they showed more of a killer instinct in a 75-47 victory. And that's the Cordova squad head coach Jason Boerger wants to see on a regular basis. "I'm really proud of the improvement we showed in our focus and concentration from Friday to Saturday," Boerger said. "I'm not sure we could have played much better on Saturday than we did, and I am proud of our effort." With the sweep, the Wolverines improved to 11-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Southcentral Conference. In the first game, Cordova led 21-4 after eight minutes and 37-15 at halftime, seemingly headed toward a blowout. But Nikiski had other ideas, outscoring the home team 18-7 to make things interesting entering the fourth quarter. "The Nikiski staff did a great job of making adjustments in the second half," Boerger said. "We didn't come out with as much energy in the third quarter but managed to make a nice push early in the fourth quarter to put us up for good." Cordova's Christian Brockert bagged 22 points while teammates Dane Meyer and Keith Nolan each scored a dozen. Nikiski's Lucas Herrin scored 18 points. In the second game, Cordova again jumped out a big first-quarter advantage (17-3) and again Nikiski made a push to get close. But unlike Friday the Wolverines sealed the deal like a championship team, ending the game on a 39-27 run. "The big difference was the second half," Boerger said. "We came out with a lot more focus and played a great team game." Meyer went off for 22 points and Eric Johnson exploded for 16 points to lead the way. "Eric Johnson was really tough inside and made some nice plays," the coach said. "When he can get him going inside, it opens up our shooters so much more." On the girls side, the Lady Wolverines also swept Nikiski after winning 41-26 Friday and 40-23 Saturday. The first night featured a topsy-turvy game that saw both teams challenge for control. Finally, Cordova seized the lead for good in the fourth quarter. The Webber wonder women led the way, with Misa amassing 17 points and eight rebounds, and Teal collecting 14 points. "According to Nikiski coach Lee Moore this was the Bulldogs best game of the season," Cordova coach Virginia Anderson said. As far as the next night went ... "It was a totally different game," Anderson said. The Lady Wolverines jumped all over Nikiski early and often, building a 20-8 cushion by halftime and cruising the rest of the way. Anderson credited her team's success was controlling the battle of the boards, with Angela Beedle grabbing 11 rebounds and Misa Webber hauling in nine boards. Misa Webber led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Angie Kelly added nine pints, Teal Webber collected eight and Christina Morrisett chipped in four. The Lady Wolverines are now 2-2 in the Southcentral Conference. Van Williams can be reached at vwilliams@alaskanewspapers.com, or by phone at 907-348-2452 or 800-770-9830, ext. 452 |
