The Cordova Times - Fur and Feathers - Red-backed and Tundra Voles

I think anyone who pays any attention at all to the natural surroundings of south-central Alaska has seen a Red-backed Vole. They\'re everywhere, but hidden most of the time. From your wood shed to the alpine, they\'re there. Although they are diminutive and mouse-like, it\'s a huge deal to have them in the ecosystem. Everything eats them. Birds, mammals, even fish with any carnivorous or omnivorous tendencies will prey on them like a municipal cop with your unsuspecting loose dog running down Lake Avenue. They\'re hungry for \'em.
