When I grew up we lived so far back in the woods that when we went hunting, we had to hunt towards town. Mom and Dad raised cattle and sheep along Wages Creek on California\'s north coast. We had a year-round garden, an orchard, chickens, ducks, pigs, milk cows—the works. We didn\'t often have to go to town for groceries and stuff. Ma had a wood cookstove, and I\'ll tell you, she could cook. We kids had so much to do that sometimes we didn\'t know which way to jump. Of course we had chores, but we were also allowed plenty of time for trout fishing, hunting, and all the fun stuff. Ma was usually the boss, and she said we could go as far as our legs could carry us, just be back by dark. We lived like kings and didn\'t know it.
