In the 1980s there was a well-maintained nine-hole golf course south of the Copper River Highway at Mile 8. It had Hills Brothers coffee cans imbedded in the ground for holes, each with its own numbered flag. A box on a pole off the wide spot on the road contained scorecards with the number of yards and par for each hole. Ken Van Brocklin, Charlie Nestor, Popo Richardson, Mel Johnson and Don Van Brocklin were some of the creators of this free, self-service golf course.
