The Cordova pinochle gang was up to tricks earlier this week, surprising Helen Grindle on her birthday with a chocolate cake. Grindle, who turned 99 on July 2, was born in Cape Yakataga. She has lived in Cordova since the 1930’s, raising four children as a single mother following the death of her husband at an early age. Grindle supported the family through a long career in Cordova’s canneries. According to her friends, Grindle continues to provide fierce competition at the card table.
