Kelp farming takes off in Prince William Sound

Kelp farmer Cale Herschleb has one of the more unique commutes in the U.S. After leaving his mooring in the harbor in Cordova, the Celtic Lady — Herschleb’s 45-foot fishing boat — tows along a small skiff while battling powerful wind gusts and currents for two hours before reaching his kelp farm out on Prince William Sound. 

Coast Guard rescues two on Montague Island

A Coast Guard helicopter crew forward deployed to Cordova rescued two people on Tuesday, July 5, after their P-18 Super Cub aircraft crashed just above the high tide line on Montague Island.

Crewmember from Bristol Bay fishing vessel medevaced

Coast Guard aircrews evacuated an individual from a 167-foot fishing vessel on Saturday, July 2, six miles west of the Egegik River, after a land-based dispatcher stated the vessel needed assistance for a female crewmember reportedly experiencing sepsis-like symptoms.

Salmon Jam, emergency training, music camps and more!

This year’s Copper River Salmon Jam festival will be a weeklong event from July 11-16, with events spread out around Cordova. Festival events will include: Alaska Salmon Runs Races, Small Fry Kids’ Activities, Salmon Jam Rock Garden, Dumpster Painting, Taste of Cordova Community Potluck, Artisan Market and live music by local acts around town throughout the week.

CDFU will share donated salmon with elders on July 6

Cordova District Fishermen United will hold its annual Senior Salmon Day 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at the Union Hall on Main Street. CDFU will share donated fillets of wild Alaska salmon with seniors aged 60 years and older.

Around Town: Fourth of July, Senior Salmon Day and Salmon Jam

The Cordova Chamber of Commerce announced its annual Old Time 4th of July Celebration will begin at noon Monday, July 4, at Hollis Henrichs Park. This Cordova classic will include a host of fun activities and competitions, food vendors, an Artisan Market, and live folk music. Everyone is invited to attend this free event from noon-3 p.m.
