Dementia awareness legislation passes Legislature

Legislation introduced by Speaker of the House Louise Stutes, R-Kodiak, that creates a dementia awareness and early detection campaign and builds healthcare capacity to meeting the growing number of dementia cases in Alaska has passed the Legislature and awaits the governor’s signature.

Photographer James Barker honored by Rasmuson Foundation

Fairbanks photographer James H. Barker, who is well known for his extensive work among Alaska Native peoples, is being honored as the Rasmuson Foundation’s 2022 Distinguished Artist. Barker is the 19th Alaskan named by the foundation as a distinguished artist and the first photographer to receive the award.

HB 322 protects future funds for marine highway, scholarships

House Bill 322, designed to protect funding sources for the Alaska Marine Highway and higher education scholarships, has passed the Legislature and now awaits Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s signature.

Meaning behind the totem that flank new science center entrance

On a sunny spring morning in mid-April, Mike Webber applies a deep cedar-toned stain to finish the second of two totem poles. After months spent designing, carving and sanding, within minutes, the stain seals the wood, preparing the pole for Cordovan weather and accentuating the distinctive beak and talons of the totem’s main character, a carved eagle.

School district will provide summer meals for children

The Cordova School District is participating in the Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals to all children up to 18 years of age. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mt. Eccles Elementary School in Cordova.
