@ Your Library: Friends of the Library news

The Friends of the Library (FOL) met recently and planned out a year’s worth of events and activities to support the Cordova Public Library.  This completely volunteer organization is working hard to help make our library the best it can possibly be!

President Krysta Williams organized the most recent meeting and the group decided on sponsoring, organizing or contributing to a library program during each season of the year.  Coming this fall the annual Trick or Treat for Books event. Always fun and festive, the FOL purchase books in all age ranges to give to the children of Cordova on Halloween night. This year’s event will be held in the Education Room in the Cordova Center and along with the book giveaway there will also be a photo corner where you can snap a quick memory of Halloween attire.  Mark Monday, October 31st from 4:30-6:00 pm on your calendar.

On the horizon for the Friends group is planning a ‘Chocolate Friendsy Event’ where wine and chocolate pairings will be offered. Tentatively set in February, this event will be hopefully a successful fund-raiser for the group.  In April, the Friends will sponsor National Poetry Month with special events including a Poetry Slam and A Poem A Day Won’t Kill You.  The summer season will feature a children’s film fund-raiser with a blockbuster event for the young (and old) at heart.

The Friends of the Library recently received non-profit status so the group can fund-raise and financially assist the Cordova Public Library with book purchases, program supplies or even some specialty furnishings for the new library. FOL is always looking for new volunteers to join the fun. A sign-up sheet is at the library. Meetings are only held four times a year and there are a myriad of volunteer opportunities at the new library.

Something is changing at the Cordova Public Library

After some research of how other libraries handle the circulation of DVD’s the Cordova Public Library staff has decided to fill those cases!  Previously empty DVD cases were shelved for patrons to choose from and the process of checking DVDs in and out was cumbersome and time-consuming for the patron and the staff. Now with the DVD in the case, all patrons need to do is bring them to the front desk to be scanned just like a book and Wha-La you are out the door!  We hope this change will be a welcome one to our patrons.  We’re in the process of putting together a big order of new DVDs for those long winter months ahead of us. Stop by and add your suggestions to the wish list!
