Alaska tribes, villages get $7M for housing, development

ANCHORAGE — Twelve Alaska Native entities have won a total of more than $7 million in federal grants for housing and community development projects.

The money announced Monday comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from its Indian Community Development program.

HUD officials say the payout is part of more than $56.5 million in Indian Community Development block grants being distributed to 77 Native American communities across the nation.

The Alaska recipients include tribes, villages and tribal organizations. Among them are the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes, the Tanana Chiefs Conference and the Native villages of Fort Yukon, Saxman, Karluk and Nanwalek.

HUD officials say the Alaska grants will cover nearly 70 housing units as well as a number of community facilities.
