SE Alaska humpy forecast up for 2017

A strong odd year for Southeast Alaska pink salmon is predicted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, with a point estimate of 43 million fish.

An actual harvest of 43 million humpies would be just above the recent 10-year average harvest of 39 million pinks, state biologists said Nov. 7.

The forecast was produced using a forecast of the rend in the harvest, and the forecast trend adjusted using 2016 juvenile pink salmon abundance date provided by NOAA Fisheries, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Auke Bay Laboratories.

Department staff will be on hand to discuss this forecast and plan for the 2017 season at the Southeast Alaska Purse Seine Task Force meeting scheduled for Dec. 1 in Juneau.
