Sheldon Jackson Museum seeks Native artists

Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum are seeking applications through Dec. 21 for the museum’s 2018 Native Artist Residency program, which will run from June through the end of September.

Four residency positions are available.

The first residency, from June 8-30, involves working at the museum and with Sitka Fine Arts Camp middle school students. It offers an artist stipend of $1,900, travel to and from Sitka, a food per diem to offset food costs, and lodging.

The second residency, which runs from June 30 through July 21, involves working at the museum and with Sitka Fine Arts Camp high school students. The residency offers an artist stipend of $1,900, travel to and from Sitka, a food per diem to offset food costs, and lodging.

The third residency from July 26 through Aug. 12, and the fourth residency, Aug. 22 through Sept. 8, involve working only at the museum, with an artist stipend of $1,300, travel to and from Sitka, a food per diem to offset food costs, and lodging.

Each artist in residence will have a welcome dinner with the local welcome committee, plus paid time accessing and studying the museum’s exceptional Alaska Native ethnographic and art collection.

Artists-in-residence may focus on traditional or contemporary Native art forms including but not limited to wood carving, ivory carving, silver engraving, beading, skin, gut and fish skin sewing, drum making, basket or textile weaving, drumming, and dancing. Outstanding beginners as well as experienced artists are welcome to apply. Benefits include utilizing the museum’s collections for research.
