Marine safety instructor program offered in February

A five-day marine safety instructor training program will be offered by Alaska Marine Safety Education Association Feb. 6-10 at the North Pacific Fishing Vessel Owners Association in Seattle.

The intensive train-the-trainer course aims to prepare individuals to effectively teach cold water survival procedures, use of marine safety equipment and vessel safety drills.

Interested mariners may register online at www.amsea.org or call (907) 747-3287.

Topics to be covered include preparation for emergencies, cold water near drowning, hypothermia, cold water survival, survival equipment, procedures and onboard drills, risk assessment, ergonomics, and methods of instruction.

AMSEA recommended this workshop for anyone who wanted to provide cold-water survival, shore-side survival or marine safety instruction, like the U.S. Coast Guard-required drill conductor certification for commercial fishermen.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be prepared to teach AMSEA’S U.S. Coast Guard approved fishing vessel drill conductor training, pending authorization from the Coast Guard.

The cost is $875 for AMSEA members and $995 for non-members. Scholarships may be available for commercial fishermen.
