The 2A Borealis Conference Volleyball playoffs began Nov. 16 at Su Valley High School near Wasilla. The double-elimination tournament will last three days.
Cordova entered the playoff seeded No. 3. Undefeated Unalaska was ranked No. 1, followed by host Su Valley, seeded No. 2. Ninilchik, Wasilla Christian, Cook Inlet Academy, and Birchwood Christian rounded out the field.
The Wolverines will play their first match at 5:30 p.m. on the opening day of the playoffs. Their opponent depends upon the outcome of matches between other conference schools which were played on Nov. 15.
Cordova swept a series with Birchwood here on Nov. 10 and 11. CHS won the Nov.11 match 3-0; the next day they prevailed 3-1. Both contests were close in the early going.
“We always seem to start slow, and then pick up the tempo,” Cordova Coach Janelle Greenwood said.
Last year the Cordova spikers advanced to State, and placed 4th overall.
Greenwood is hoping to advance to State again.
“We lost to both Unalaska and SuValley early in the year, but I think we have improved quite a bit since then,” Greenwood said.
Volleyball action started back in August, before school was even in session.
“It’s a long season,” Greenwood said. “Plus we have traveled a lot, including a trip all the way out to Unalaska. But we’re excited, and I think we’re going to have a good tournament.”
