CHS volleyball team finishes 5th at districts

The Cordova Volleyball team finished fifth in the Borealis Conference playoffs at SuValley on Nov. 16-18.

The CHS girls defeated Ninilchik in the opening round on Thursday, Nov. 16, but then lost of pair of games the next day.

Eventual tournament champs SuValley topped the Lady Wolverines in their first match on Friday, Nov. 17. An hour and a half later, CHS played but lost a marathon battle against Birchwood that went 5 games.

We played hard and never gave up,” Cordova Coach Janelle Greenwood said. “But we just couldn’t seem to find our rhythm.”

Several CHS players received individual honors. Aliyea Malazo and Riley Butler were named to the All-Conference team, which was based on play for the entire season. Jieler Tabara and Edrea Navarro were selected to the playoff All-Tournament squad; and Samantha Vargas was Cordova’s representative on the All-Academic team.

With the volleyball season now complete, many of these same athletes will have a brief break before shifting to basketball.

Practices for that sport beginning on Nov. 29, and the Valdez Buccaneers will be in Cordova for a season-opening series on Dec. 15-16.
