ORIGINAL STORY:

ANCHORAGE — An Alaska man who opened fire at a neighbor in an Anchorage neighborhood and then fired at police officers after they responded was fatally shot by a police officer, authorities said Thursday.

Officers went to a four-unit condominium unit where the man lived after a woman living in another unit reported her window was broken just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

The woman told police she was inspecting the damage outside the home with a maintenance worker around 11:20 p.m. when the man emerged from his garage and began shooting at them. The two ran inside and called 911, said Deputy Anchorage Police Chief Kenneth McCoy.

After police arrived, the unidentified man again came out of his garage and shot at officers and one officer returned fire, hitting the man at least once in the upper torso, McCoy said.

Officers began life-saving efforts until rescue workers arrived, who eventually declared the man dead, according to police. No one else was hurt.

Police did not identify the man pending notification of family. McCoy declined to identify the race of the officer and man shot and said he was “very proud of our officers.”

“They acted heroically and neutralized a very dangerous situation,” McCoy said, adding that police have not determined a motive for why the man started shooting.

Police spokesman MJ Thim said police officers at the scene were not wearing body cameras and he did know if dash cameras in their vehicles recorded any part of the incident.

The officer involved in the shooting was not identified and has been placed on mandatory administrative leave. The case will be submitted for review by the state Office of Special Prosecutions.

The shooting is the second fatal shooting involving Anchorage police this year. Police have said officers shot and killed a man Nov. 15 after he pointed a gun at officers.

Police have also said there were two nonfatal police involved shootings in Anchorage this year.
