Despite traveling to Fairbanks with only six players, Cordova’s Lady Wolverines swept Effie Kokrine in a pair of 2A Interior Conference games on Jan. 5 and 6.

In the first game, Cordova poured in a season high 61 points, winning 61-23. The Lady W’s doubled Effie, 38-19, in the second contest.

Cordova’s Edrea Navarro had 22 points the first night and 16 the next.

Nailea Martinez, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, continued to be a key contributor, with 21 points and 13 rebounds in the opener, followed by 12 points and 9 rebounds in the rematch.

Keyona Mattson, a transfer from Houston High in the MatSu area, had eight points the first night.

Abby Bourgeois sat out both games with injuries from the Rally the Regions tournament a week earlier. Despite the long travel, the remaining five girls “managed to play well without fouling out both days,” said CHS Coach Brad Sjostedt.

The Lady Wolverines have now won three games in a row, and will enter the Cordova Tipoff with a 3-5 overall record.
