American Lung Association urges smoke free workplace law

Officials with the American Lung Association say it’s time that Alaska passes a strong smoke free workplace law, a policy that would reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and save lives.

In its 16th annual report grading states on policies to prevent and reduce tobacco use, the ALA said Jan. 24 that state policymakers must do more to prevent the death and disease associated with tobacco use and secondhand smoke.

Statewide polling shows strong public support for a statewide law, with 69 percent of Alaskans in favor of a smoke free workplace law, the association said. Legislation to that effect passed the state Senate 15-5 in 2017, but in the House, the measure still sits in the House Judiciary Committee, the final committee of referral, the association said.
