Cordova’s Lady Wolverines won the 36th Cordova Tipoff tournament, going undefeated in three days of round-robin action here on Jan. 18-20.
CHS edged the Palmer JV’s 41-39 in an exciting overtime first round matchup. The score was tied 39-39 at the end of four quarters, and Cordova freshman Ingrid Arvidson made the only basket in overtime to win it for the Lady Wolverines.
Abby Bourgeois led Cordova with 14 points. Edrea Navarro was also in double digits, with 10. Rosie Toro topped the Palmer JV scoring with 10 points.
The Lady Wolverines then cruised past the ACS JV’s and Unalakleet.
Bourgeois led CHS with 18 points in a lopsided 53-30 win over ACS on Friday. Cordova connected on seven three-pointers in that game, including three by Navarro.
Nailea Martinez poured in 19 points to lead CHS in Saturday’s 50-30 win over Unalakleet. Martinez, a 5’7” junior, has been a key element in the Lady Wolverine success this season. After missing almost all of last year’s season with a knee injury, she has sparked Cordova with her aggressive rebounding, scrappy defense, and all-around play.
The Lady Wolverines have rattled off six wins in a row, and this is their first Tipoff title since 2009.
Cordova’s Abby Bourgeois and Edrea Navarro were selected to the All-Tournament team, along with Summer Sagoonick and Alexandria Ivanoff from Unalakleet; Danielle Umbrage, Jillian Buker, and Rosie Toro from Palmer; and Flo Tebbits from ACS.
Kelsey Smallwood from ACS was named Tournament MVP. The team Sportsmanship Award went to Unalakleet.
