Two men medevaced north of Cold Bay

Crew members from the two fishing vessels were medevaced in under two hours by the Coast Guard 135 miles north of Cold Bay on Jan. 22 and transported to Cold Bay for flights to commercial medical services.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew forward deployed to Cold Bay hoisted a 21-year-old man from the Ocean Peace at 5 p.m. after getting a report that the man was suffering from sea sickness and had lost consciousness. An hour and a half later, the crew hoisted a 37-year-old man reported to have suffered a hip injury from the Northern Patriot.

Weather on scene at the time of the medevacs was 30-to-40 mile an hour winds, with 14-to-18 foot seas and 10 miles visibility.

According to Petty Officer 1st Class Luis Fagalnifin, 17th District command Center, the rescue was aided by excellent communication and coordination between the command center, the Coast Guard crew and the two fishing vessels.
