Around Town: Knit your first sweater, Aloha Iceworm and diabetes self-management class

 

Senior books and coffee

The library is hosting “Senior Books and Coffee” from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the library fireplace nook. They’ll introduce new books and location travel books in honor of the Iceworm Festival’s Aloha theme.

Community debriefing

There will be a community debriefing, requested by Joanie Behrends, about the recent earthquake and tsunami warning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at North Star Theatre in the Cordova Center.  Come to share stories, get the latest information about the sirens, learn more about the evacuation plan and discuss ways for improvement.

Knit Lit Book Club

The Cordova Public Library is hosting the Knit Lit Book Club at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the library fireplace nook. Bring your knitting or handcraft!

Aloha Iceworm

Cordova’s annual Iceworm Festival is scheduled for Jan. 27 through Feb. 3. Diabetes Self-Management Class

NVE is offering a Diabetes Self-Management Class for six weeks beginning Feb. 7 through March 14, meeting at the Wellness Center (the old DMV office). Participants will learn how to manage their diabetes, create action plans and communicate with their health care professionals. The class is open to diabetics and their caregivers and tribal and non-tribal members who are currently patients at Ilanka Medical Clinic. Participants will receive fresh produce every week they attend and if they attend all six classes will receive a monthly Full Circle box for one year. Knit your fist sweater: The flax sweater

The Net Loft is hosting a four-session knitting class on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. starting Feb. 10 through March 3. Join Sally Bennett and learn the techniques needed to make your first sweater. The class costs $50, plus materials. The pattern is free and there is 10 percent off class materials. Pre-registration is required.

Winter White at Copper River Gallery

Gallery show “Winter White” featuring all local artists continues at The Copper River Gallery in the Cordova Center. The Cordova Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. 

Al-Anon returns to Cordova

Al-Anon meetings for friends and family of alcoholics will meet Monday nights at 7 p.m. at the Wellness Center (old DMV office). For more information, contact Katie at 907-965-5909.

Food pantry services

The Little Chapel is administering Salvation Army extension food pantry services. People needing assistance can pick up food on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Little Chapel. In an emergency at other times, call the Little Chapel at 907-424-3629. Native Village of Eyak administers food distribution on behalf of the Food Bank of Alaska.
