Crewman medevaced 70 miles west of Cold Bay

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak crew on Jan. 28 transported a man suffering from abdominal pain from the 210-foot fishing vessel Ocean Rover to Cold Bay for further transfer to medical facilities in Anchorage.

According to Lt. Danny Piazza, 17th district command center duty officer, the Coast Guard received a medevac request from Health Force Partners for the 59-year-old man at about 6:26 a.m. and the Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended the medevac.

Weather on scene some 70 miles west of Cold Bay at the time of the medevac was 20-mile-an-hour winds, 10-foot seas and 10 miles visibility.

“This is exactly why we have our assets forward deployed to Cold Bay during the winter fishing season,” Piazza said.

This was the third medevac within a week for the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews.

On Jan. 22, the Coast Guard hoisted a 21-year-old man from the Ocean Peace at 5 p.m. after getting a report that the man was suffering from sea sickness and had lost consciousness. An hour and a half later, the crew hoisted a 37-year-old man reported to have suffered a hip injury from the Northern Patriot.
