Climate, Cordova and Extreme Weather

The Cordova High School Tsunami Bowl teams present: Climate, Cordova, and Extreme Weather at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the third floor of the USFS building. Come hear about their work on ‘Extreme Snow’ and ‘Extreme Rain’ events affecting Cordovans.

 

Diabetes Self-Management Class

Native Village of Eyak is offering a Diabetes Self-Management Class for six weeks from Feb. 7 through March 14, at the Wellness Center (old Department of Motor Vehicles office). Participants will learn how to manage their diabetes, create action plans and communicate with their health care professionals. The class is open to diabetics and their caregivers and tribal and non-tribal members who are currently patients at Ilanka Medical Clinic. Participants will receive fresh produce every week they attend and if they attend all six classes will receive a monthly Full Circle box for one year. COASST training session

Qualify to volunteer with the Cordova Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team by attending the training session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Cordova Center education room. COASST volunteers collect data on beach-cast carcasses of marine birds on a monthly basis to establish the baseline pattern of bird mortality on North Pacific beaches. Knit your first sweater: The flax sweater

The Net Loft is hosting a four-session knitting class on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. starting Feb. 10 through March 3. Join Sally Bennett and learn the techniques needed to make your first sweater. The class costs $50, plus materials. The pattern is free, and participants get 10 percent off class materials. Pre-registration is required.

 

Emergency Trauma Technician Class

This 40-hour medical class offers in-depth training for trauma and medical care and those who complete the course may join the ambulance crew of the Cordova Volunteer Fire Department. The certificate is good for two years. The two-week course, begins Monday, Feb. 12, at the fire hall training room. Hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. CPR for the Professional Responder is included. PWSSC Sea Squirts program

The Prince William Sound Science Center is hosting its monthly Sea Squirts program for children ages 3 to 5 at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Cordova Center education room. The theme this month will be hearts.

 

American Red Cross disaster classes

The American Red Cross of Alaska is offering free disaster classes from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and 25 at the fire hall. Call Joanie Behrends for details at 763-242-6535.

 

Moms, Pops and Tots!

This play group is open for children ages birth to 4 years old and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays (throughout the school year) at the Masonic Lodge. The group focuses on exploring developmental issues and building on each child’s strengths through large-motor skills play, small-motor skills play, pretend play and sensory play. Winter White at Copper River Gallery

Gallery show “Winter White” featuring all local artists continues at The Copper River Gallery in the Cordova Center. The Cordova Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

 

Al-Anon returns to Cordova

Al-Anon meetings for friends and family of alcoholics will meet Monday nights at 7 p.m. at the Wellness Center (old DMV office). For more information, contact Katie at 907-965-5909.

 

Food pantry services

The Little Chapel is administering Salvation Army extension food pantry services. People needing assistance can pick up food on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Little Chapel. In an emergency at other times, call the Little Chapel at 907-424-3629. Native Village of Eyak administers food distribution on behalf of the Food Bank of Alaska.
