Led by Jieller Tabara and Riley Butler, Cordova cruised past former 3A Aurora Conference rival Eielson 42-21 in the final round of the 41st Valdez Valentines Tournament on Feb. 10.

Tabara, a speedy 5-2 junior, poured in a game high 13 points, and was later named to the all-tournament team. Butler, a 5-9 junior playing in her first games of the season, added 12.

In the tournament’s first round of play on Feb. 10, Cordova fell to Delta, another former 3A rival, by a 46-30 final. The Lady W’s struggled in the second and third quarters, scoring only 6 points in that 16-minute stretch.

Tabara topped the CHS attack with 8 points. Delta finished with four players in double digits, led by Shelby Killingsworth with 12.

Cordova gave 4A North Pole quite a battle on Friday, Feb. 9. Neither team could find the range in the first half, which ended with Cordova behind 9-6.

Cordova’s six first half points came on one three-point field goal, one two-point field goal and one free throw, an unusual piece of trivia for the CHS girls’ basketball scoring records.

Both teams tallied 17 points in the second half, with the Patriots hanging on to win 26-23. Keyona Mattson led CHS with 9 points, including a pair of three’s. Laura Donovan topped the Patriot scoring with 10 points.

The Lady Wolverines are now 7-9 overall, and 2-4 in conference play. They will face Interior Conference opponent Tok here on Feb. 16-17 in Homecoming games that will wrap up Wolverine action in Cordova this season.

CHS will then have away games at Unalaska and Su-Valley before Conference Playoffs at Nenana on March 8-10.

Galena topped Bethel to win the girls side of the Valdez tournament, with the Valdez Lady Bucs finishing third.
