Superintendent: Prop. 1 could not be enforced in Anchorage schools

Anchorage School District Superintendent Deena Bishop says that should the so-called bathroom bill pass during the municipal election on April 3 that it could not be enforced in Anchorage schools.

“The enforcement of this policy is not possible,” Bishop testified during a meeting of the Anchorage School Board on Feb. 20. “We will not stand guard at our restroom doors, so as we move forward and learn what this brings to us, we are keeping student safety in mind.

“There is nothing in the budget that moves forward anyone to play the role of law enforcement in the restroom.”

Proposition 1 is designed to prohibit any individual from using a restroom or locker room designated for the opposite sex, according to the individual’s assigned sex on their birth certificate.

Former Anchorage School Superintendent Carol Comeau is also among a growing coalition of civic leaders and organizations urging a “no” vote on Prop. 1.

The proposition is supported by the Alaska Family Council and Alaska Family Action.

Ballots will go out in the mail to qualified registered voters 21 days before the April 3 election, which will be Anchorage’s first vote by mail election system.
