Around Town: PTA Noel Pallas Scholarship Dinner, pasta fundraiser and ‘Arsenic & Old Lace’

Knit Lit Book Club

The Knit Lit Book Club will be meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the library fireplace nook. This month’s book is “The Dalai Lama’s Cat.”

 

Seniors and Books

If you are 50 years or older join the “Seniors and Books” group. The group will be meeting from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the library. Learn about new books, e-books and DVD’s at the library, where prize winning books will be featured this month. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

 

Diabetes Self-Management Class

The Native Village of Eyak is offering a Diabetes Self-Management Class for six weeks from Feb. 7 through March 14, at the Wellness Center (old Department of Motor Vehicles office). Participants will learn how to manage their diabetes, create action plans and communicate with their health care professionals. The class is open to diabetics and their caregivers, and tribal and non-tribal members who are currently patients at Ilanka Medical Clinic. Participants will receive fresh produce every week they attend and if they attend all six classes will receive a monthly Full Circle box for one year. 6 weeks to a healthier you

This group meets 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday nights through April 8 at the Red Dragon. Participants will cook and eat healthy food and desserts, learn about nutrition and practice light exercise. ‘Arsenic & Old Lace’

Stage of the Tide presents “Arsenic & Old Lace” at the North Star Theatre at 7 p.m. March 2-3. Tickets are $10 and available for purchase at The Net Loft and at the door. The show is suitable for ages 8 and up.

 

The Quebe Sisters Concert

The Quebe Sisters will be performing Texas swing and harmonies at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 at the North Star Theatre.

 

Pasta fundraiser

The Native Village of Eyak’s Tribal Youth Council invites everyone to their pasta fundraiser and cake walk from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 at the Masonic Hall. NVE is raising money to go to Egg Islands with their elders this spring. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door, or from a tribal youth council member. PTA Noel Pallas Scholarship Dinner

A scholarship dinner will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8 at Mt. Eccles Elementary School. The dinner includes vegetarian or meat lasagna, salad, bread and dessert. The cost is $12 per person or $40 for a family of four ($10 for each additional family member). You can eat in or take out and it is encouraged that you bring your own take-out containers to promote less waste.

 

Moms, Pops and Tots!

This play group is open for children from newborn to 4 years old and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays (throughout the school year) at the Masonic Lodge. The group focuses on exploring developmental issues and building on each child’s strengths through large-motor skills play, small-motor skills play, pretend play and sensory play. Al-Anon returns to Cordova

Al-Anon meetings for friends and family of alcoholics will meet Monday nights at 7 p.m. at the Wellness Center (old DMV office). For more information, contact Katie at 907-965-5909.

 

Food pantry services

The Little Chapel is administering Salvation Army extension food pantry services. People needing assistance can pick up food on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Little Chapel. In an emergency at other times, call the Little Chapel at 907-424-3629. Native Village of Eyak administers food distribution on behalf of the Food Bank of Alaska.
