Unalaska tops Lady Wolverines in non-conference play

Unalaska topped Cordova’s Lady Wolverines 46-30 and 40-33 in non-conference play at Dutch Harbor on Feb. 23 and 24.

The long trip westward started with an Alaska Air jet ride to Anchorage, followed by three hours on a much smaller PenAir commuter plane.  Both the Cordova girls and boys teams played much better the second day, after recovering from the marathon flight along the Aleutian Chain.

Jim Wilson, Unalaska High School principal and former boys coach, was impressed.  “The Cordova kids were great.  We don’t have many home games, and it was an exciting weekend.”

The exhausted Lady Wolverine fell behind 22-2 in the first eight minutes of the first game and could not recover.  Riley Butler led CHS with 12 points; Abby Bourgeois added 6, Inga Arvidson 5, Keyona  Mattson  2, and Jieller Tabara 1.  Hailey Wilson topped the Unalaska scoring with 16.

In the second game, Cordova jumped out to a 13-9 lead after one quarter, with the Raiders rallying to take a 23-19 halftime advantage.  Unalaska stretched their lead to 38-27 after three periods; and despite being held to only two points by scrappy Cordova defense in the last eight minutes, won by 7.

CHS had terrific scoring balance.  Edrea Navarro led Cordova with 9 points; Abby Bourgeois, Jieller Tabara, and Riley Butler each had 8. Wilson again led Unalaska with 13.
