Letter to the Editor: What your yes or no vote on Proposition 3 means

On May 15, Cordovans will have the opportunity to vote for or against the cultivation, testing and sale of marijuana within the city limits of Cordova. Recently, I’ve heard a fair bit of confusion about what a “yes” or “no” vote on Proposition 3 means, so I wanted to try to clarify:

A vote of NO on Prop 3 would allow marijuana establishments within city limits, but not within buffer zones around areas such as schools and churches. The city would collect sales tax from all purchases. Vote NO if you want to see marijuana allowed to be regulated in Cordova.

A vote of YES on Prop 3 would ban marijuana establishments within city limits. However, because marijuana is legal at the state-level (passed in November 2014), a business could legally set up shop beyond city limits. In this scenario, the city would not collect revenue from sales tax. Vote YES if you want to ban marijuana establishments in Cordova.

The wording seems counterintuitive because the proposition asks whether the city code should be amended to “prohibit” marijuana establishment operations from within city limits; thus — yes to prohibit, or no to not prohibit.

Don’t forget to get out and vote Cordova! May is a busy time of year for everyone, but there is plenty of opportunity to let your voice be heard. Vote on May 15 (7 a.m. to 8 p.m.) or early vote from May 1-14 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday) at the Cordova Center!
