Sweeney confirmation backed by Alaska senators

Tara Sweeney’s nomination to be assistant secretary of Indian Affairs in the Interior Department has the full backing of Alaska’s Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan.

Both testified in her behalf on May 9 during a nomination hearing in the Indian Affairs Committee in Washington D.C.  Sweeney, a former co-chair of the Alaska Federation of Natives and chairman of the Arctic Economic Council, would be the first Alaska Native to serve in that position.

Sweeney was nominated in October by President Trump to be one of five assistant secretaries at the Interior Department.
The post she is nominated for supports fulfilling the nation’s trust responsibility to federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and villages and individual Indian trust beneficiaries, as well as upholding the federal-tribal government-to-government relationship.
