Coast Guard: limited VHF coverage in areas of PWS

In an alert to mariners issued on Sunday, May 20, the U.S. Coast Guard said that until further notice there is no VHF-FM coverage in the area of Whittier and Passage Canal in Prince William Sound.

Mariners are being asked to relay distress calls to the nearest Coast Guard unit or call the Sector Anchorage command center at 1-907-428-4100.

The Coast Guard is currently awaiting parts on order to repair the situation.

Vessels departing Whittier will transit through an area of no coverage before they have the ability to contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16.

The Coast Guard does not have a channel 16 distress listening watch in Northwestern Prince William Sound, Port Wells, Whitter, Northern Culross Passage and Passage Canal.
