Summer Reading workshops begin June 6

Storytime for Little Ones, After School Art and Teen Art on hiatus until Fall

Books on table

The Cordova Public Library is ready to keep children reading and busy during the summer break from school. Traditionally, summer reading programs are designed to encourage elementary-aged children to keep reading during summer vacation. Preventing the “summer slide” continues to be the main objective of summer reading programs.

Here are some benefits of summer reading programming for children:

  • Children are motivated to read.
  • Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books and the library.
  • Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.
  • Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.
  • Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.

Youth Services Librarian Anna Hernandez has created a wonderfully unique and different type of program for this summer’s programming.

For Summer Reading this year we are trying something new. We will have more of a “Summer Learning” approach through a series of guest workshops for ages 5 and up and will still highlight wonderful new books to complement the workshops. All children are invited to keep a reading log throughout the summer to earn prizes.

Summer Reading will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, after the school lunch program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., through June and July.

Here are some of the programs to look forward to:

  • Musical Instruments: Ukulele Workshop with Belle & Cordova 4-H
  • Birds and Music: Workshop with Stefanie & Science Center
  • Hooping & Music: Hula Hooping Workshop with Kayley
  • Painting to Music: Painting ROCKS!!!
  • Musical Instruments: Grand Piano Workshop
  • And more!

The grand finale for the Summer Reading Program will be a public performance with Krambambuil Puppet Theatre and a puppet making workshop!
