PWS weathervane scallop fishery opens

The Prince William Sound area commercial weathervane scallop season in the West Kayak subsection opened on July 1 with a guideline harvest level of 6,300 pounds.

The East Kayak subsection will remain closed until survey information is analyzed, said Jan Rumble, area groundfish management biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Homer.

ADF&G has been assessing weathervane scallops near Kayak Island since 1996. A survey in the East Kayak subsection was completed recently. Guideline harvest levels are derived from this survey and once analysis is completed the season will be announced along with its guideline harvest level.
